A pilonidal sinus is an infection of the skin between the buttocks caused by an in-grow of a hear in the skin.
Causes
Obesity, sedentary lifestyle/ prolonged sitting (lorry driver), deep Natal cleft, family history, hirsutes (lots of hair growth), especially when having dark strong hairs.
Symptoms
Acute onset of mild to severe pain (especially when sitting), intermittent mucoid/ purulent/ bloody discharge, fever/ malaise, prevention of recurrence by keeping the natal hair short

Treatment
This is usually treated by excision of the abscess or sinus followed by the advice to frequently shave the hairs in that region.
