Haemorrhoids are blood-vessel piles in the anus that can cause itching or sometimes bleeding, and in some cases (when the vessel is thrombosed) pain.
Causes
Aging, chronic constipation or diarrhoea, obesity, pregnancy, prolonged sitting, straining at defecation or micturition, rectal cancer, portal hypertension.
Symptoms
Itching, rectal bleeding and discharge, anal tissue protruding out from the anus, and usually haemorrhoids are painless unless the haemorrhoid is complicated (thrombosed, ulcerating or necrotic or when in combination with an anal fissure.
Diagnostics
Proctoscopy and sigmoidoscopy/ or colonoscopy to exclude at rectal mass.
