Small bowel tumors are rare (only 3% of all intestinal cancers) and include carcinoid tumors (neuro-endocrine tumors), adenocarcinomas, sarcomas and lymphomas. The treatment and prognosis depends on multiple factors including cancer type and stage.
Cause
Males, race (black), genetic (FAP, HNPCC, Lynch and Peutz-Jeghers syndrome), IBD (Crohn’s disease), auto-immune diseases (HIV/ AIDS), smoking, alcohol consumption.
Symptoms
Abdominal pain/ cramps, a lump in your abdomen, nausea/ vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss, anaemia, jaundice, bloody stools, flushed skin (arms & upper-body)
Diagnostics
Blood tests, double balloon enteroscopy + biopsy, capsule endoscopy, CT (MRI), laparoscopy.
Treatment
Surgical removal of the tumor or when not possible to create an intestinal bypass, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, somatostatine analogues, targeted therapy.
Risks of the surgery
Hematoma/bleeding, anastomotic leakage or fistula, stenosis of the anastomosis, wound infection, wound dehiscence, local recurrence of the tumor, thrombosis/ pulmonary embolism.
