Sarcoma is a name for a large group of soft tissue tumors under the skin or in the muscle or sometimes in the abdomen (and of tumors in the bone).

Causes

A large (growing) benign swelling (like lipoma), exposure to radiation or chemotherapy, genetic disorders, certain viruses.

Symptoms

A large palpable growing swelling under the skin, in the muscles, abdomen or bone. pain.

Diagnostics

Ultrasound with tissue biopsy, MRI, CT-scan or PET scan are imaging techniques being used.

Treatment

The treatment usually consists of a combination of surgical removal of the tumor, which is possibly followed by radiotherapy, immunotherapy or chemotherapy. As surgical resection is the mainstay of the treatment it is crucial that a proper complete resection of the mass is performed in order to avoid regrowth of the tumor. This requires the experience is surgical resection of these sarcomas.

Risks of the surgery

Hematoma/bleeding, wound infection, seroma, numbness of the skin, loss of muscle power (in case of a sarcoma of the muscles), local recurrence of the tumor, lymph oedema when postop radiated.
