Breast lesions are in most cases benign (cysts, fibroadenoma) and removal can take concerns of a palpable lesion away. But in some cases a breast lesion can contain cancer. With proper imaging and a multidisciplinary approach and treatment these breast cancers usually have a very good prognosis. Choosing the right surgeon enhances complete tumor removal as well as optimises cosmetic results.
Causes
Smoking, drinking of alcohol, obesity, genetic predisposition (commonly BRCA1 &BRCA2)
Symptoms
Can consist of a palpable breast or axillary lesion, pain, skin changes of the breast, bloody discharge of the nipple bleeding or dimpling of the breast or a lesion found accidentally of a screening mammogram (breast x-ray) or other imaging.
Diagnostics
Mammogram, breast-axillary ultrasound, and sometimes a breast MRI. In case of malignancy blood tests and a CT scan will be done additionally.
Treatment
In the multidisciplinary treatment of breast cancer we predominantly aim at breast-sparing (lumpectomy) reconstructive surgery, thus avoiding breast amputation as much as possible, and possibly combined with an axillary sentinel lymph node biopsy or dissection. If the breast lesion is not palpable (only visible on imaging) a radiological marking of the lesion might be required before the surgery. In most cases the patient can go home the day after the surgery. This surgery is provided in a combined treatment plan, which can contain other modalities like chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiotherapy depending on the type and stage of the cancer as being decided multidisciplinary tumor-board.
Risks of the surgery
Hematoma, lymph fluid collection (seroma), wound infection, scar tissue, sensitivity of the breast, numbness of the skin, thrombosis.
